“4 days stay in Hazel the vintage caravan. Great holiday, so much to recommend. Great hosts, caravan is super well-equipped and the additional bathroom for our sole use was really welcome. Enjoyed the local walks and sitting by the firepit and bbq. Would highly recommend!”

our story

We, Bee and Trevor, moved to West Somerset a few years ago after falling in love with the area. We decided we wanted to spend more time outside growing produce and enjoying our beautiful surroundings.

Being so close to the West Somerset railway and being near the Exmoor Dark Sky area, we were inspired to create Steam & Stars!  We drew up our ideas for a low-impact, sustainable and glamorous holiday accommodation.

We gained planning permission in early 2019 and chose local contractors for almost all elements of the groundworks and build.

ENVIRONMENTAL

We are really excited to offer an Electric Vehicle charging point, as we recognise the benefits of using electric vehicles and want to show our support for any guests choosing to use them.

For visitors who arrive by public transport it could not be easier. Taunton railway station is a short bus ride from Steam & Stars. The Taunton to Minehead bus stop is a short stroll from Steam and Stars.

Williton shops are a short walk across the fields and Williton heritage railway station is a further ten-minute walk.

  • We provide eco washing up liquid and compostable sponges. We are experimenting with growing our own loofahs too.
  • We provide recycling facilities and compost all uncooked fruit and veg so it can help push up next season's produce.
  • We buy local farmers' milk in glass bottles and the rest of our welcome breakfast is bought locally.

Locally Sourced

We locally source all the goodies and treats for our lovely guests' welcome packs. This further reduces our footprint on the planet. Some of these goodies (when in season) will be grown in our kitchen garden. We plant with nature in mind and do not use any chemical fertilisers or insecticides.

We want our footprint to be as light as possible. Consequently we accessed a natural water supply via a borehole. The water has been filtered by rocks, possibly for many thousands of years but has been further filtered and UV treated to ensure it is safe for us and our guests.

Dark Skies

DARK SKIES

Steam & Stars are thrilled to have been granted Dark Sky accreditation by Exmoor National Park. Exmoor National Park was the first area in the Europe to be recognised as an International Dark Sky Reserve (IDSR), one of only 19 worldwide!

PLATFORM ANNOUNCEMENT

The West Somerset Railway runs nearly 23 miles through 11 stations from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard. The closest station is in the nearby village of Williton which, as mentioned, is within walking distance.

The railway line passes about 200 metres from Steam & Stars itself and when trains are running you can see steam trains from your very own deck. As the track inclines slightly at this point, full steam is needed to pull the carriages.

When atmospheric conditions are right great plumes of steam create the perfect photo opportunity for the enthusiast and the sound of the engine is mesmerising. Within our landscaping we have built in a raised viewing platform for your delight!
